Michael Jackson Essay

Construct an essay:

Analyse how the Billy Jean music video by Michael Jackson represent or subvert black stereotypes of black identity.

Word count minimum 700

The music video "Billie jean" was recorded in 1982,directed by Micheal Jackson himself and Quincy jones. The song is considered to be a pop and R&B which is stereotypical for a black male artist. The pop video is upbeat and has Michael Jackson doing his iconic dances moves down the street which is also another generalisation of black people have good rhythm and are good dancers. At the beginning each cut between shots is on the beat which creates a flow of rhythm to the music.Michael Jacksons short film "Billie jean" which is a music video about love which is a stereotypical topic for the pop genre, were he sings about how a woman named Billie Jean is lying by  claiming  Jackson is the father of her child.Black men gave the stereotype of not taking responsibility for the child and that they're absent fathers. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals as a man is stalking Michael Jackson trying to set hi up for a crime even though he is innocent.

He was the first black artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, due to having the best music video production ,which then got lots of people interested and amazed at the entertaining  Pop video with a different style which then influenced other artists. In the video the music is very performances based as the camera focuses on him as he walks down the urban street. The pavement lights up as he dances which has a disco vibe and draws the attention to his dancing footwork. Everything Jackson touched turned white as though,it is purified. The floor, the homeless man changes into a white suit, the dirty bin becomes white and the bed sheets also glows which can be portrayed as

'be careful of who you love' which implies that they have had a history together but the adjective 'careful' portrays she may be crazy which refers back to the statement he isn't the father. 'She is just a girl that claims that I am the the one'', thus has stereotypes of black men as they're seen as 'breaking young girls hearts' as they're stereotyped for messing around with girls and being emotionless as they play with their feelings. The story is linear,as the narrative is in chronological order.Although, the narrative is enigmatic as the end is left open with him being invisible but notifying the audience he is still their as the floor lights up.

Black people also have the stereotype of being criminals 'law was on her side' this creates thus portrays she got the court involved and that her plan was making him look in the wrong, 'she's in demand' it can be assumed she is a  white  female and is taken more seriously by the law as she gets sympathy, whereas Michael Jackson is looked down upon as he looks like a father who doesn't want to claim his child.Furthermore, the man stalking Jackson is also a white man who is trying to set him up negatively as they try to portray him as a bad person. The audience how get see him being happy dancing and also helping the homeless which makes the audience see Michael Jackson look innocent as he is the protagonist.Whereas, the detective is dressed in a dark outfit and is portrayed as sly and mischievous which makes him the antagonist. In addition, it is also justified as the video is argued to show voyeurism as the audience are permitted to watch him perform live in front of a billboard .Moreover the billboards are of two white females who are seen  as looking down on him thus further evoking sense of everyone "watching".

  • detective taking photos he then he disappears showing the paps are trying to make a story were there isn't one
  • "dont go around breaking young girls hearts"
  • whatever he touches turns white meaning pure
  • changing scenes on the beat of the drums (in flow of rhythm)
  •  stylist choregraphy, fast beat, bright clothing and lighting refers ti the mainstream pop
  • billboards are seen looking down on him

THE SHORT FILM
Director: Steve Barron
Primary Production Location: Los Angeles, California
Michael Jackson's short film for "Billie Jean" was the first of three short films produced for recordings from Thriller, which continues its reign as the biggest selling album of all time with worldwide sales in excess of 105 million as of June 1, 2016 and in December, 2015 became the first ever album to be awarded triple diamond status by the RIAA for US sales alone. The "Billie Jean" single reached No. 1 in 10 countries in the spring of 1983, including seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 - becoming the second-highest selling single in America that same year.
The short film featured a paparazzo attempting to photograph Jackson as he danced through an urban landscape. A specially created set featured steps and sidewalk tiles that lit up underneath Michael's feet. It is here that fans first saw some of Michael's best-known dance moves, such as spinning and landing on his toes. Many of Michael's steps and mannerisms in the video would become forever associated with The King of Pop.
The "Billie Jean" short film made history as the first video by a black artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV, then in its second year. In 1992, the short film was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. MTV ranked "Billie Jean" as the 35th greatest music video of all time in 1999, one of three entries of Jackson's on the chart alongside "Thriller" and "Beat It."

She was more like a beauty queen
From a movie scene
I said, "Don't mind, but what do you mean
I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round?"
She said I am the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
She told me her name was Billie Jean
As she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
People always told me, "Be careful of what you do.
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts."
And mother always told me, "A-be careful of who you love,
And be careful of what you do
'Cause the lie becomes the truth."
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son
For forty days and for forty nights
Law was on her side
But who can stand
When she's in demand
Her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice
Just remember to always think twice
(Do think twice, do think twice.)

She told, "My baby, we'd danced 'til three."
Then she looked at me
Then showed a photo of a baby cry
His eyes looked like mine, oh, no
Do a dance on the floor in the round, baby
A-people always told me, "Be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts."
(Don't break no heart.)
A-but she came and stood right by me
And just the smell of sweet perfume
And this happened much too soon
And she called me to her room
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
(No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.)
Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son
She says I am the one
But the kid is not my son
No, no, no

Billie Jean is not my lover
She's just a girl who claims that I am the one
(No, there's not me, baby.)
But the kid is not my son
(No, no, no, no, no, no, no.)
She says I am the one (No, babe.)
But the kid is not my son, no, no, no
She says I am the one
You know what you did
She says he is my son
Breaking my heart, babe
She says I am the one
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
Billie Jean is not my lover
She is the one
Billie Jean is not my lover
She is the one
Don't call me Billie Jean
She is the one
Billie Jean is not my lover
She is the one
Billie Jean is not my lover

Micheal Jackson was accused of having "billie Jeans" child,as she was filing a law suit trying to claim money from him.The paparazzi were following him around taking photos of Micheal however he isn't shown in the photos. This reflects how the allegations were false and that "but the kid is not my son".Michael is seen as being the good person as he gives money to the poor at the beginning going on with his life, whereas, the detective is in a dark clothing and is portrayed as being manipulative as they try to create a story out of nothing.

"Super Freak" was released about five months after MTV went on the air, and Rick James made a slick video for the song hoping it would get some spins on the network.  However, MTV refused to play videos by black artists, and they rejected this clip, continuing to feed America a steady stream of rock and EuroPop. This refusal to play black music conventional wisdom was that you would lose your white listeners if you played black music.
Rick James video presented a hyper-sexualised black male who white women found attractive.
Rick James’ subliminal media language of “the “Black Buck” was not suited to white white producers.

Camera/Editing: In the beginning of the video the colouring is black and white with a dark contrast which sets a dark and scary atmosphere. The setting is also isolated so this enhances the danger and engages the audience as they want to find out more. The slow motion shadow shots start to pace up and turn to jump cuts of different body shots (hand, legs, body) which creates the illusion of flashes which slowly introduces whats about to happen to the audience. Suddenly it turns into normal colour onto the  singer Michael Jackson immediately walking down the path we've just witnessed in black and white, now in colour. The shot of (0.8seconds) of the character of an illeged investigator flashes up and then instantly disappears, which is effective as it creates the eery effect of being watched.

Narrative: The plot shows the moral decay and poverty of the setting but it's also talking about an overobsessive fan that thinks that her kid is Michael Jacksons's son. It is slightly clear throughout the video as we get the idea of being stalked.

Million Reasons is a contrasting example of a contemporary music video from a world famous, white, female artist. This particular video (from the album Joanne) marks a change in direction for the artist as media producers make use of media language to construct representations that might attract a broader, more mainstream market whilst not alienating the artist’s core fan base.

Media Language: how the media through their forms, codes, conventions and techniques communicate meanings.

Media Representation: How the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups.

representation  in video
  1. when B+w she is staring at the mirror as she is getting ready for performance
  2. in desert   cost- minds not there
  3. friends help (sister hood )
  4. religon -lyrics "lord show me the way"
  5. wearing pink links to girls
  6. suits links to boys

  • desert sounds (peaceful) to a more dramatic horror sound
  • black and white reflects her mood
  • when in the car, back stage she is sad whereas, when she is on the stage performing she is happy
  •  Lady Gaga's approach is that she states very clearly what it's like and doesn't embellish the sad truth or spend unnecessary time trying to make us cry.
  • The song's musical style reflects this as well. Lady Gaga's voice is very loud and clear in the mix, and the accompanying instruments, mainly a simple guitar and a piano combination, do little to distract from what she's saying.
  •  "You're giving me a million reasons to let you go / . . . to quit the show." She's talking about a relationship that isn't going well. The other person has messed up again and again, and she's not sure she can take it anymore. The reasons to leave keep building.
  • Without revealing the box's contents, we revert back to color, and the reveal of her now-signature Gladys Tamez-designed wide-brimmed pink hat.
  • As the second verse begins, we flash back to the beginning of the video to detail what got her here.
First shot extreme wide shot in high angle of her rolling away in the desert - 'if i had a highway i would run for the hills' - rolling away form her problems - lost her mind - stereotype of women being emotional.
Emotion is a running theme throughout the whole video - in the desert - sad - in the makeup chair - sad - on stage - confident, proud, bold posture.
Desert sounds are meant to be relaxing, goes from the relaxed setting to a loud and stressful sound. goes form happy to sad. colour to black and white.
Black and white - simple - raw - easy to understand
Colour is complex and has many layers to it.
non chronological - the running thoughts going through her mind make no sense
warm glow (sepia) reminiscing to childhood and normality- to black and waitpeople will always be
dark car - high angle camera shot - like cctv - seeing the behind the scenes her - she is very private, introverted even when on stage.
she is ferried around like important cargo that is fragile - like a leader of people- several cars with blacked out windows all for one person - fragile - women stereotype
collection of hats and clothes and dresses, stereotype of women being obsessed by appearance.
Telling a story of loss and how things have to get worse before they get better, and people will always be there to pick you up and shield you from other negativities.
Ends on a close up shot of her looking at a tattoo of hope
Indirect mode of address.
when introduced to this colourful, pink, bold leader she looks confident and strong - direct mode of address.
desert is peaceful and leads into a dramatic horror sound
car - sad  - stage confident
approach is that she states clearly how she feels - she is being honest and truthful.
loud and clear - instruments are little distraction form her voice.
as the second verse begins, it flashes back to the desert to the details that got her there.
It is an independent experience for whomever watches and listens to it.
0:15- laying on her back in the desert, weakness, vulnerability
1:08- Looking sad, looking down, slumped body language, black and white for depressive mood, emotional which links to stereotype
1:14- heavy makeup which links to the stereotype that women need to wear makeup to make them look good
1:17- hiding her face behind the guitar, trying to hide who she is
2:07- friends running to rescue her in desert, weakness, friends will always be there and you don't need a man
2:32- head in hands, shows emotion and sadness
2:55- back to makeup chair, looks distressed and emotional
3:32- wearing a cross, and a priest touching her shoulder to represent God showing her the right path
3:52- hat and sunglasses on to hide identity and emotion in desert
3:58- pink suit shows she is going against normality

First shot- extreme wide shot of her rolling around in the desert- shows she is rolling away from her problems and worries and trying to hide
Colour is complex and has many layers
Non chronological order- running thoughts going through her head make no sense
Desert is peaceful and leads into a dramatic horror sound
Car- sad, stage confident
Approach is that she states clearly how she feels, being honest and truthful
When introduced to this colouful, pink, bold leader she looks confident and strong- direct mode of address
Ends on a close up of her looking at the tattoo of hope
Analysis of the music video
0:15
  • mid shot
  • lying on her back, eyes closed, with sun against her in the desert
  • music is soft and somber like a dream like state
  • slow pan downwards from the sun to her face before zooming into a mid shot
0:25-0:30
  • dressed in all blade with blade shades and hat, in a black car going along a dark road leading to know where; death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown.
"Lord, show me the way
But baby, I just need one good one to stay" - cross necklace - christ is salvation - he is the one good reason to stay - one figure to another figure

Liesbet van Zoonen: Feminist theory
Suggests gender is constructed through discourse, and that its meaning varies according to cultural and historical context
Advocates that the very presentation of women’s bodies as objects to be looked at is a core element of western patriarchal culture
Also presents that in mainstream culture, the visual and narrative codes that are used to construct the male body are different from those used to objectify the female body Codes- a system of words, letters, Feminist theory:

Bell hooks: Feminist theory
Propose that feminism is a struggle to end sexist/patriarchal oppression and the whole ideology of domination
Suggest the idea that feminism is a political commitment rather than a lifestyle choice
Advocates that other factors, such as race and class, as well as sex, determine the extent to which individuals are exploited, discriminated against or oppressed

Males have the image of being strong and brave whereas women have the representation through media such as magazines, music videos, video games, films as they are seen as being damsels of distress.Theres is image on adverts were the womans face is not identified as her legs are the only subject in the photo. This shows that she is objectified as is used as a decoration.

Task 4:
Revisit the Music Video
Identify the countertypes

Use screen prints and annotations to help convey the media language linked to countertypes

At the start there is a wide shot and it slowly pans as she is rolling down the hill, showing her vulnerability and emotional state.Later on she is on the floor with a close up shot showing her facial expressions. The clip of her in dull lighting has the connotations of not wanting to be in the spotlight and just wanting to be left alone. The black and white scenes reflections on her past as it can be portrayed as reflecting her suffering of depression before she was with her fiance,as she no longer wanted to continue her career. Lady Gaga goes again the counter stereotypes of woman as she decides to wear a suit which goes against the norms of females representation as they're normally seen with less clothing."bell hooks" argues woman are exploited and discriminated against, whereas others may argue that woman are not forced to wear certain clothing thus can wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

She is on the desert isolated from everyone else, this can link to the theorist Liesbet van Zoonen as she is viewed as a damsel in distress as she is emotional unstable and needs her 'fiancé' to change for the better. The camera is looking down on her with the high angle shot. She is seen looking into the sky as though she is deep in her thoughts and seeking for advice from God.The warm glow, sepia, also reflects  reminiscing to childhood and normality. This shot links to her later statement which is "hundred reasons to run away " conveying she is all alone because of him.The Desert sounds are meant to be relaxing, ass it goes from the relaxed setting to a loud and stressful sound. goes form happy to sad. colour to black and white. This can be representation of how her  relationship with Christian Carino is like and how she is happy with him but he also makes her upset. The flashbacks then finishes with her friends then  pick her up as she then puts on her hat and glasses back on and pretends as though she is fine, being strong for her fans, showing her fans she cares as she carries on getting ready for her concert trying not to be emotionally transparent and vulnerable.

Females have the counter stereotype of associating pink with females, she is in a dark atmosphere as the background and half of her face is hidden this is normally use to emphasise a sinister side or that she is always int he spotlit and wants to be alone. This can also reflect on her emotions as she portrays to be a happy person in her shocking outfits, however, she is rather emotional and finally wants to come out to her fans. The dark shot reflects with her emotions as she is upset. The darker and louder music is later introduced showing how her thought are always following her.She is seen shaking her head thus conveys she is annoyed and stressed out ,

The black and white image conveys that she is emotional and sad as the dark colours reflect her mood,it also allows the viewer to see the emotion on her face as she is been "painted with makeup"to hide her emotions like a mask. The counter stereotype is shown here as some feminists argue that makeup  is a tool of the patriarchy, designed to oppress women and keep them in their places. She has two people surrounding her as she is having her hair and makeup done which is contradicts what she wants as she wants to be by herself alone on the dessert. The imagery reflects on how she needs to look perfect as a pop star when really she is sad.The words she uses "You're givin' me a million reasons; Give me a million reasons; Givin' me a million reasons; About a million reasons" - The repetition of this line emphasises the insecurity Gaga feels about this relationship. She’s constantly questioning the state of their romance and whether it’s worth pursuing. Time after time, he forces her to reconsider their future together.

She appears to be sad and worn out however  has to go to work
Every heartbreak makes it hard to keep the faith" - Perhaps more generally, each time someone lets her down and breaks her heart, she feels herself giving up on people more, making it difficult to trust those around her. By using the word “faith” specifically, she links her faith in these connections with the more religious faith that she displays in the chorus by praying to God.
