Task 2:
Summary on the big issue

The big issue offers employment opportunities to people who are in poverty. This is a multi-million pound investment business supporting enterprise to drive social change. These people hand 0out the magazine to sell.

How much do the vendors charge for the magazine, how much do they pay for it.
They buy it for £1.25 and sell it for £2

What is the tag line underneath the Masthead /Logo of the Big Issue, why is this important?
A hand up not a hand out

Task 3:
Right wing newspapers
daily mail
left wing newspapers
Daily mirror,the guardian,

How is this migrant group represented by the right wing press?
The migrant group are presented negatively they come to England to be and go to muslims as they know they will pay due to religious reasons.

Identify the negative representations from the text.

They had been blamed for a surge in petty crime and begging .Rumours abound of Romanian beggars earning £100 a day in London.Viorica and Sonia said they each could earn about £40 a day, targeting wealthy Arabs and other Muslims who shop in the area and for whom giving to beggars is a central religious tenet.
Task 4:
  • One hundred people sleep rough in the Stratford Centre in east London at night
  • At the shopping centre the men and women can eat and rest away from the cold
  • They can only be removed if they are causing a disturbance at the mall
Create a summary of how homeless migrants are represented, use Shildrick & MacDonald in support of your views
Migrants are seen as being represented as
They are represented as being desperate and portray them in a negative light giving negative examples of social behavior that have occurred thus, creates the idea of them trying to aware others of the negative things thta have happend rather than trying o acknowledge them trying to get their life together. This shows they believe they should be getting help and to stop staying at the centre.
Identify examples of anti- social behavior .
someone got hit over the head with a vodka bottle, grooming gangs,fights,4 regular people died-health complications, substance abuse, alcoholism+drug addiction ,mental health issues ,prostitution
Task 5:

Jermey Coryn says we need to register the number of homeless ex-servicemen and women. They want to help them as they don't deserve to be homeless.

Representations of poverty and underclass
Portrayal usually negative and stereotypical,
Portrayed in the form of statistics in news bulletin such as figures of unemployment,
Recent media interest in the labelling of the poor such as “chavs” which according to Shildrick and MacDonald (2007) suggest that the poor are undeserving of sympathy, • Hayward and Yar (2006) – the term chav is used as an amusing term of abuse for young poor people
•

Representations of the working class • Newman (2006) argues that there are very few situation comedies, television or drama which focuses on the everyday lives of working class who constitute a significant section of society,
Newman argues that when in the media working class are often depicted in a very non positive light dumb buffoons (Homer Simpson) and immature machos (Phil Mitchell),

Butsch (1992) – working class portrayed as flawed individuals (benefit cheats, etc)

Signifier = something that symbolises something else

Totem = A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe.(what the cat symbolises)

Explanation “In Bob we Trust” (anchorage) Bob the Cat associated with God therefore inferring a supernatural power/help.    -links to Barthes ENIGMA cod

The colours of the poster are blues and whites reflecting on the col atmosphere, the dark blue sky conveys it is nighttime and that the homeless people are going to be in the cold at night thus, can lead them to becoming seriously ill or death. The snow in the sky and the lights create a sense of magic and pretty which juxtaposes with the message. This can reflect on how the worrying issue can be managed. The angle of the camera is at eye level which reflects on the cat looking straight into the viewer creating a sense of sympathy for the isolated pet as this is the main focus, the depth of field has the background blurred to make the cat stand out more in the poster.
This is a real imagery as it reflects on how the homeless are going to be in the cold at night, however, the photo is not as gruesome and upsetting as the actual situation as it is more light hearted.

\DAILY EXPRESS LAUNCH HOMES FOR HEOROS CAMPAIGN/

The daily Express announced that 1 out of 10 homeless people are ex service and it can be due to PTSD,mental breakdowns  and alcohol and drug addictions as they want to escape from society. They're a right wing newspaper who believe servicemen should be given higher priority over  homes and accommodations and laws should be changed to make it  more legible so the council don't avoid the issue. They want the council  to help veterans get housing. The 2012 armed  forces and community covenant says local authorities 'should' rather than 'must' conveying they're not making it a priority.Furthermore, veterans are lower down in the table when looking for housing making it harder for them to get housing. Veterans are waiting for their benefit payments which takes a long period of time as they're unemployed.Marriages are decreasing and divorces are decreasing showing the broken down family structure and partnership can led them into being lonely having nobody to help them in their difficult situation.

War veterans and homelessness
Discuss why the Big Issue chose to highlight this issue.
Why might the issue be important for their audience.
The big issue choose to speak about this issue because not alot of people know the amount of veterans that end up homeless, they want to inform others about this problem. This was published on the 05 of November, released around remembrance day, highlighting the fact people who fought for our country are suffering and how they're ignored. This issue might be important for their audience because it makes more people be king and helpful to those who need ut

some statistics:

He said: “Nearly all the homeless veterans we come across have PTSD or some form of mental health problem. Once they leave the Army, they loose their support structure. “Those suffering from PTSD will often turn to drink and that can have an impact on the marriage and in a short period of time a veteran can find himself homeless. Charity bosses say the problem has been made worse by cuts to the armed forces, which has led to almost 30,000 troops losing their jobs since 2010.“Soldiers are strong and asking for help felt like weakness. I refused to acknowledge my mental health issues and my life spiralled out of control. after feeling so powerful and respected in the military. The stress of the situation made my symptoms worse, the flashbacks and nightmares were worse and they became more frequent.

Most media studies on poverty point in the direction of a recurring observation that usually the poor are presented in one of two contrasting frames: the ‘deserving poor’ and the ‘undeserving poor’.
While the frame of deserving poor employs a sympathetic treatment of the poor, the frame of the undeserving poor is built upon the rhetoric of deficiency in individuals who are portrayed as a burden on the taxpayer due to their dependency on welfare policies

New Theory - Gerbner theory

Theory: Cultivation theory states that high frequency viewers of television are more susceptible to media messages and the belief that they are real and valid. Heavy viewers are exposed to more violence and therefore are effected by the Mean World Syndrome, the belief that the world is a far worse and dangerous place then it actually is. According to the theory heavy viewing of television is creating a homogeneous and fearful populace, however so many studies have been done in this area that really no one knows how or even if violence on TV or in film negatively or positively affects its audience.
Now cultivation theory has taken on a more general definition in regards to mass media. It now extends to encompass the idea that television colours our perception of the world. For example; if someone stays inside and watch news about crime all day, they might be inclined to believe that the crime rate is far higher than it actually is and they might easily become the victim of a crime. Or in another sense heavy viewership of any media   can perpetuate stereotypes both positive and negative. It really comes down to the question of to what extent does reality shape TV and vice versa.

Exam

23/11/2018
You will create an essay on issue of the Big issue: Still at War.  You will anaylyse the media language and media representations associated with the front cover.
As part of the essay you will need to discuss the social and politcal contexts which have lead to a rise in homelessness in overall and inparticular within the veteran community
You will also discuss how newspapers (right wing and Big Issue) vary in the way the represent homelessness.  As part of your arguments you are required to use Gerbners theory

The big issue choose to speak about this issue because not a lot of people know the amount of veterans that end up homeless, they want to inform others about this problem. This was published on the 05 of November, released around remembrance day, highlighting the fact people who fought for our country are suffering and how they're ignored. This issue might be important for their audience because it makes more people be king and helpful to those who need it.The red poppy In the left corner is there to symbolise the blood that has been shed.

The big issue has created a newspaper for veterans with the main cover line being 'still at war' the sans serif writing is in large writing and capitals. However, the word "WAR" stands out due to it being larger compared to the rest of the text. The cover line makes the audience feel sympathy for the man as he isn't physically in the war but still feels as though he is fighting to have a home and security. The lexi "STILL" also stands out due to the black text box, heightening the fact he is still fighting and  compares living in Britain as the same being in war.The smaller serif writing "lives, fighting for our future'  which looks as though it could be apart of a confidential file this shows how mental illnesses can be very
hidden, it also reflects on the privacy and secrecy about the knowledge of how veterans are homeless.

The mans face is almost camouflaged to the wall which refers to the war and being invisible, this links to him being on the streets not be acknowledged for the hard work and risks they have taken to then be homeless. The colour pop of the green helmet creates the ideology of war as the newspaper constantly reminds the viewer. The pop colour also empathised  the risks and danger he put himself through. His emotions is hard to identify as you question how he is feeling this creates sympathy towards the man as him being grey can be seen as reflecting his mood "invisible".

The daily Express announced that 1 out of 10 homeless people are ex service and it can be due to PTSD,mental breakdowns  and alcohol and drug addictions as they want to escape from society. Charity bosses say the problem has been made worse by cuts to the armed forces, which has led to almost 30,000 troops losing their jobs since 2010.“Soldiers are strong and asking for help felt like weakness.
